How to use a 10K split chart

For a 40-minute 10K, a consistent 4:00/km (about 6:26/mile) would put you at 3 km in 12:00, 5 km in 20:00 and 8 km in 32:00. A 50-minute 10K corresponds to 5:00/km, reaching those same markers at 15:00, 25:00 and 40:00.

Why check the 5 km split?

At even speed, your 5 km split is half your total 10K goal time. Reaching that checkpoint considerably faster than planned can mean an aggressive opening that is hard to maintain. A faster second half can also be intentional if the effort is sustainable.

Will a hilly course produce even splits?

Not necessarily. Hills, turns and wind can make consistent effort more realistic than identical pace. See the 10K pacing guide for pacing decisions over the first 2 km, middle 6 km and final 2 km.

Need an unlisted goal time?

Use the race splits calculator for any other finish time or the race splits planner to explore variable pacing.
